New tender for trams in Magdeburg

Magdeburg’s public transport operator MVB Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe has announced plans to start a tender process for the purchase of 35 new low-floor tramways – with the delivery of the first unit in 2022. 10 tramcars will be used for increase service to meet passenger demand. The other 25 will replace parts of the current fleet which is composed by 83 low-floor tramways built by LHB/Alstom between 1994 and 2012, 4 Tatra T6A2M and 13 Tatra B6A2M trailer cars (all new in 1988-90). 11 of the trailer are ex BVG Berlin and are operated “coupled” with the low-floor tramways.

The new vehicles will have a length of some 38 meters and a width of 2.40 m, some 9 meters longer and 10 cm wider than the current fleet.

Financing is still to be clarified as significant funds from the German federal state Sachsen-Anhalt are expected.
