By Tram Across Poland In 1974

This extraordinary book takes the reader on a journey to the socialist Poland of 1974, when a small group of English transport enthusiasts travelled to the country’s tramway systems. Numerous colour photos were taken in the various cities, which give us an insight into the everyday life of the population 50 years ago. Of course, the focus is on the operating procedures and the – despite standardisation – still varied types of tram cars, some of which date back to the pre-war period. The pictures were taken by the two co-authors Michael Russell and Peter Haseldine, and the quality of the photographs is convincing throughout. Both have already enriched numerous other books and specialised articles with their pictures.

This is essentially a photo book, supplemented by a travelogue written by Peter Haseldine, which was published in a similar form shortly after the journey fifty years ago in the British magazine Modern Tramway and provides a very good overview. At the end of the book there is a complete list of the trams and tram models in use on each system in Poland in 1974, compiled by Tomasz Igielski.

All texts are written in three languages, Polish, English and German, which makes the book particularly interesting for international readers. Conclusion: An excellent publication of outstanding quality at a reasonable price.
